Annual Focus Week 2006 - Every Child Matters

The aim of our 2006 Lifestyles week was to highlight and focus on the 'Every Child Matters' guidance from the Government.  In this document we are asked to ensure that we teach children about ways to enjoy a healthy lifestyle.  This involves the following 5 areas:

  1. Be healthy
  2. Stay safe
  3. Enjoy and achieve
  4. Make a positive contribution
  5. Achieve economic well being
We had an action packed week, and can only show a small number of the amazing activities which took place here, but we hope you will get a flavour of the fun we had learning new skills during this special week....

Sue Brown came to work with us to make prints with an etching press

We all had great fun dressing up on 'Japanese Day', our teacher Mrs Hemmings

and our Chair of Governors Mr Duester are pictured here in their Japanese costume.  As well as dressing up for the day we did origami, used chopsticks and learned some Japanese vocabulary.

Picking up smarties with chopsticks proved particularly difficult!

A Year 6 group prepared and served lunch for themselves and 4 members of staff.  Vegetarian curry and summer pudding..... delicious!

Some people are disabled and have to adapt their lifestyle.  We found out what it would be like in a wheelchair and what it's like to help.

John Franklin came to tell
us about his expedition to climb Kilimanjaro and Class 1 dressed up in a John's climbing clothes.  We also tasted water that had been purified with chlorine tablets.

Finding water in Africa is hard work.  We made a waterhole for our thirsty animals.

Carry the water carefully and don't spill
    it!

Tim Foster came to help us with problem solving

We also had visits from

  • the Police to tell us about keeping safe and their jobs in the community
  • the school nurse came to talk about good hygiene
  • a puppy came to visit us who was being trained to be a guide dog
  • Rev Crippen came to take assembly
  • School Governor Mr Sanders came to tell us about filling our Aqua Box to help people in areas of the world affected by disasters
  • Laura Summers, international skipping champion came to teach us new and complicated skipping techniques
  • A Book Fair was available every day after school during lifestyles week

Year 6  managing the Fair Trade Stall at the end of Lifestyles Week.

and we all visited the Life Education Van which has an illuminated full size body model, audio visuals, an electronic talking brain, a stair ceiling and, of course, Harold, the happy healthy singing giraffe puppet (as ever, an amazing experience).

And last but by no means least, we would like to offer thanks to the Friends of Great Rissington School; the Governors and parents who gave of their time so willingly to make our week so enjoyable.  We could not have managed without you!

PHEW..... WHAT AN AMAZING WEEK!!!
