We have decided to try to develop our school as a sustainable environment and we are working towards the ECO School Green Flag Award. We have set up an Eco Schools Action group, which includes children who have been elected from each year group, members of staff, governors and parents.  Last week we held our first meeting and the children have written about our progress so far for the Village News.  Our first task is to complete a school audit to see if we can find ways of saving energy.

Here are contributions from some of our Eco School Warriors in the ECO School Action group.

ECO Warrior, Natalie Webb, Year 3
At Great Rissington School in Class 1, 2 and 3 we voted for ECO friendly people to be a group of people to have meetings after school and talk about how to save the environment.

Tips:

  • Re-cycle paper to save trees
  • Build a compost heap
  • Have a shower to save water, not a bath
  • If it is cold put a jumper on instead of putting the heating on
  • Buy energy saving light bulbs.

ECO Warrior, Robin Connolly, Year 2
We need to save our planet by saving energy. Great Rissington School has set up an action group to save the world! In our homes and gardens start saving energy as much as possible, it needs some work to pass it on. Spread it out to friends and family. Quick our planet needs you! But remember instead of just doing it now, do it FOREVER!

ECO Warriors, Alice Tonks - Year 6, Catherine Knowles - Year 6 and Katrina Bogdiukiewicz - Year 5.

"Last week Great Rissington School nominated an eco-group and we had our first meeting. We chose secretaries and chairpersons to write the agenda and make decisions. Global warming is a big issue in our world. Polar bears and other arctic creatures are losing their homes due to the world warming up and the icebergs melting into the sea. This means sea levels rising and in just 100 years, part of the world could be covered in water! This will cause huge traumas and only we can help.

In our meetings we are thinking about all the ways we could help the environment. We have thought about re-cycling paper, re-using paper, not littering, not wasting water, helping wildlife and saving energy. All you need to do is try that little bit harder!

We hope that we will be able to report our Eco School progress regularly in the Village News and that we may be able to find ways of involving the local community in our initiatives."
